Cool… finally!
December 9th, 2004 - 10:31am
This is my third summer at Deakin, which would normally also mean that it would be the third time working in a virtual sauna. Usually, over summer it gets so hot that I sweat and literally “stick” to the desk. Even though Deakin’s intentions were good — make an open-plan, Environmentally Sensitive Design (ESD) building which doesn’t use horrible gases (i.e. air-conditioning) to cool the office.
If we’re prepared, and work in a cave-like building with all the lights off, the shades drawn and remember to activate the cooling at 8am or earlier (there’s usually people here at all hours of the day, so that’s not an issue) it’s usually fine until 2-3 in the afternoon.
None of that matters though, because today is the day that they’re starting to install the air-conditioning! It’s also rather ironic that the person who helmed the ESD designs of the building actually left for another job last Friday.
So, hopefully this time next week, or when I come back next year, I won’t be melting at my desk. Pity though, now there’s less to whinge about.
