Sigiri

Lesly, the other IT guy in Melbourne had been asking for a couple of weeks if Justine and I would like to come to a Sri Lankan buffet restaurant. Anyone who has been reading this site for a while should know my feelings towards buffets; I was assured, however, that the food at this place wasn’t as bad as my previous experiences.

So last night, Justine and I went out to the buffet restaurant — Sigiri — in Northcote (that’s High St Northcote, for those who understand the reference) with Lesly and his girlfriend Marene. The restaurant only offers buffet on Friday and Saturday nights; the other nights, it’s a regular, a la carte restaurant, which gave me some hope. The place also looked quite modern, and nice. First impressions were pretty good.

The food consisted of only Sri Lankan stuff; beef/chicken/fish/bean/dhal curry, falafel-things, rice, “hoppers”, which are a sort of pappadum-bowl thing and a crapload of other stuff. The stuff wasn’t the best I’ve had (the things which were supposed to be crispy were a bit bendy), but the curries were quite good. My faith in buffets hasn’t grown to a level where I’d feel comfortable frequenting them, but I won’t be as reluctant to visit one in the future — as long as it isn’t a Smorgy’s or similar dive.

We went back to Lesly’s place and watched the rather average The Punisher on his big screen TV. It’s a 46 or so inch rear-projection TV, which appears to be a DLP unit. Justine didn’t notice the rainbow effect until I pointed it out to her; it didn’t bother me the same way a few of the MegaMart demo units had. I still think I could use a DLP, even though I still noticed the rainbow effect I was able to ignore it most of the time.
