Grand Place, Brussels

I’d seen the Grand Place (Grote Markt) on TV before (probably “Getaway”), though I didn’t know it was in Brussels. We were only in Brussels for three hours on our way from Paris to Amsterdam and didn’t really know what sights to visit.

After wandering aimlessly through a number of streets, we turned down a skinny street and all of a sudden the street opens into this massive square. It must have been fate.

Many of these houses are 15th century and were houses of many of Belgium’s rich and famous. Many are gilt; there are two massive churches facing one another in the square and the entire place is mesmerising.
