The last time we last watched a DVD over a month ago in our project to watch 10% of our DVDs over a six month period.
We’re not watching them as quickly as I’d like now; it’s been almost seven weeks since we watched the last movie but we’re up to the seventh DVD in around twelve weeks, so we’re still on average watching them far more often that we have over the last year or so.
For our ‘G’ movie, we had some good films like Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Get Shorty, Gladiator, Go, The Goonies, The Great Escape, Grosse Pointe Blank, Gosford Park , Gremlins and God of Cookery to choose from.
We narrowed down our choice to two Bill Murray films; one written (with Dan Aykroyd) and the other directed by Harold Ramis (who plays Egon in Ghostbusters). In the end we chose Ghostbusters because it’s been longer since we watched that movie.
Besides being decidely eighties, and having some effects which haven’t held up, Ghostbusters is still a fun movie.
Next up, obviously, is ‘H’. Though there are fewer good ‘H’ movies than ‘G’ movies we still have a few decent ones from which to choose.

We’re about a quarter of the way through the DVD Project now, and F was one of the more difficult DVDs to choose, since we have quite a few good movies beginning with this letter: The Fifth Element, Fight Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Funny Farm and probably more I forget.
In the end though, there can be only one. And that one was Friday. The plot is basically a “day in the life” (a FRIday in the life, to be exact) of two friends — Craig and “Smokey” — hanging out in the projects in South Central, LA.
Unlike the sequels (Next Friday and Friday After Next) which rely on too much slapstick and retreading jokes from the first movie, this one is original, funny, clever at times and genuinely interesting to watch. A great pick.

Since we had nothing better to do after watching our ‘D’ movie, we decided to watch another. We “only” have seven or eight movies beginning with ‘E’ and had a bit of a hard time trying to decide with such a small choice. It’s really the first time in the project we’ve come across this hurdle — I hope it’s not a regular thing.
After disagreeing with most of each other’s choices, we decided to watch Earth Girls Are Easy, mostly because it is such a silly, fun, daggy movie from the late 80s.
I’d completely forgotten that the movie had any musical numbers in it — in fact I still have one of the tunes in my head at the moment, “‘Cause I’m a blonde, yeah yeah yeah!”. This is one of those “so bad it’s good” movies, that never tries to actually take itself seriously in any way.
I’ll try not to ruin the surprise, but next up is ‘F’.

It was almost two weeks since we last watched a movie for the DVD Project, but given our fantastic start out of the gate (with three movies in the first week), I don’t think that’s such an issue… at least yet.
The movie we decided to watch for our ‘D’ movie was a fun little movie called Detroit Rock City. The movie centres around four high school kids who are huge fans of the band KISS planning to attend a concert held in Detroit. It’s one of those “lots of adventures and things go wrong in a single night” movies (similar to Go or Dazed and Confused). A lot of 70s “rock” music is prevalent throughout (and in fact a bit of disco is squeezed in, too) and helps to make the movie more enjoyable.
Next up is ‘E’…

Three in one week, wow! Watching three of the DVDs we own in a week is an amazing feat for us; I don’t think we’ve watched that many in a single week for over a year!
Part of the reason it’s a bit easier is because with a much smaller amount of choice, it suddenly becomes easier to choose something to watch; when we stare at the large collection we’ve got it becomes easy to glaze over and just give up.
We watched the third movie in the project last night. It was a toss-up between Castle of Cagliostro and Catch Me If You Can, but Catch won because we don’t have to bother reading subtitles.
I really enjoyed Catch Me If You Can when I saw it in the cinema, when we first bought it on DVD, and again when we watched it last night. Sometimes when you see a film at the cinema you think to yourself “I’m getting that on DVD!” and then when you do, it’s not so good. I’m glad to see that the movie has held up for at least a few years.

Trying to capitalise on our early success with watching Anchorman the other night, we decided to quickly move onto the letter ‘B’ a night later. The movie we chose this time was A Bug’s Life. Yes, technically it begins with an ‘A’ but the way I’ve organised our DVDs ignores ‘A’ and ‘The’ at the beginning of the title.
While the story and comedy hold up pretty well, I was amazed to see how quickly Pixar’s animation dates. The animation and visuals still look amazing, but compared to watching their newer movies like Finding Nemo or The Incredibles the textures feel flat and lifeless.
Justine fell asleep either just before or around the halfway mark, but I’m going to count this as a “watched” as we both intended to watch it the whole way through. Stay tuned for the next exciting instalment!

Since many of our DVDs sit on the shelf month after month, year after year unwatched, we have decided a project to get us watching more of the DVDs we’ve shelled out for.
The rules of the project are simple: We aim to — at least once a week — watch a DVD from our collection. The DVDs will be watched in alphabetical order beginning with the letter ‘A’ and proceeding to ‘Z’ and then possibly numbers. If we both can’t agree on a movie, we’ll take it in turns to choose.
The first DVD in the project that we watched was Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
I couldn’t help but crack up at almost every one of Brick’s lines, and it also made me realise where I got the I Love Lamp title for my photo. Great stuff.
