So I decided to try some of the spicy salsa I got today with some corn chips. I dipped a tiny bit of each corn chip into the salsa (no more than 1/2cm of the pointy edge) and shook most of the salsa off. By the time I’d eaten half a dozen, I was starting to feel the effects of the insanity peppers, though I didn’t have any visions (unfortunately).

Usually I can tolerate quite hot food, though I don’t always enjoy it. However, for the moment I think I’ll need to follow Homer’s advice from that episode: “If it’s about laying off the insanity peppers, I’m way ahead of you”. This stuff is, quite simply, that hot. The ‘turbocharger’ pizza I ate once was no match for this sauce. With that pizza, as I neared the end of the pizza, I was having a bite, then having a spoonful of ice cream to help stay the heat. I think the ice cream would melt before it hit my tongue with this sauce!

I will revisit the super-spicy sauces at a later date (probably on some pork ribs) and have yet to try the “mild” (ha!) barbecue sauce, though at this point I think I will probably just be throwing them away — unless someone would like to try their luck?

Insanity Sauces!I like hot sauce. Not too hot, mind, but hot enough so that I’ll need a decent drink after half a dozen bites. Last year, I purchased some of the fantastic Jim Beam Hot Sauce, which combined two great loves — hot sauce, and booze — in a very tasty manner. I’ve previously talked about two other great loves being combined before in the form of Jim Beam Pancake Syrup!

I ran out of the Jim Beam Hot Sauce around six or eight months ago (and the pancake syrup years ago; good present though Trav) and have been wanting to get a decent hot sauce since. I’ve tried Frank’s Hot Sauce, which Justine bought for me, and it was not too bad.

Anyone who likes hot sauce though, has heard of Dave’s range of hot sauces. I’d never purchased any of Dave’s sauces for two reasons. 1) Fear. 2) They were only previously available in the US. Now, however, you can purchase it in Australia!

This morning, my first three bottles of Dave’s products arrived — some original Dave’s Insanity Sauce, a jar of Dave’s Insanity Salsa and for a milder experience, a bottle of Badlands Barbecue Sauce. I made the order late Friday afternoon, and they arrived this morning, so it was decent enough service.

However, I noticed a broken link on their website when I first looked at it a few weeks back, and advised them of the error. I never received a response so sent a similar email again the next week, also asking why should I buy from a store who never responds to email? I received a call from the owner the next morning and though the broken link hasn’t been fixed, at least he was nice enough to call.

As for the sauce? I shook the Insanity Sauce bottle, and now it looks like something inside has caught fire. I just tasted a tiny little dot, about 2mm round, and it seems as though my earlier fears were justified; now the fire has made it’s way from the jar to my mouth… don’t try this at home, kids.

Earlier today, Justine and a friend from work visited USA Foods in Bentleigh and brought a veritable swag of goodies home.

One of the things I got was yet another bottle of “hot sauce”. Unfortunately they don’t sell any of the deadly sauces (like Dave’s Insanity Sauce). Sadly, they don’t have any more of the Jim Beam pancake syrup I enjoyed so much.

In an effort to have something to write about, if I can be bothered, I am going to write mini reviews of each of the items purchased as I eat them.
