Cut Ice, Siem Reap

One of the views of the local township from our hotel balcony in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Moments earlier, a worker had been cutting up the ice on the table.

In such a warm climate, I was surprised to see how ice is used by the population versus how we keep things cool. On a number of occasions I spotted large slabs of ice easily a metre wide being cut, chipped or — in one case in the Old Market — cut up with chainsaws.

And really, if it works, why not? It’s worked for decades so why change it?
