Late last night, while planted in front of the TV, the Original Series of Star Trek came on. I wasn’t particularly interested in watching but since there was not much else on other channels, I figured I’d give it a chance.

Around thirty seconds into the episode, a green-coloured lady appeared. Immediately I knew that she and Kirk would have some sort of on-screen romance since, as we all know, James T Kirk is a ladies’ man, no matter what colour their skin.

Around half way through the episode, the green woman appears in Kirk’s jail cell and professes her love for him. Check and mate.

A pity then, that there were no people in red uniforms beamed down to the planet.

Last night, Justine and I were in bed watching some TV; while flicking through channels I saw Star Trek (the original series) on TV1. Normally, I’d skip past, but something caught my eye: one of the characters (I forget which one it was now, probably not a regular cast member) was carrying a staff with blades which I recognised.

I knew from the blades that the episode airing was the one where Kirk and Spock have their fight to the death, and that it was the episode with that music, yes, that music. Justine has heard me “singing” it many times, but didn’t know it came from Star Trek — she assumed it was The Simpsons, Family Guy or Futurama. Fair enough, too, since I don’t watch Star Trek and haven’t exactly mentioned it before.

So, we watched and watched the episode — entitled “The Gamesters of Triskelion”; quatloos were bet on newcomers, the music blasted with me singing along every time it got to that bit (read the post title) but there was no fight between Kirk and Spock. What gives?

Well, it turns out that the episode we saw wasn’t the first to use that music; it was used throughout the second season. The first episode with that music is called “Amok Time” and it takes place on the Vulcan home planet (and is copied almost exactly in a Futurama episode), but I bet no quatloos are bet at all.
